John, Last week, families devastated by the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting secured a historic $73 million settlement with Remington, the gun manufacturer of the weapon used in the attack.

We’ll never be able to bring back the 26 children and adults who were brutally murdered that day, but this victory helps bring peace to their families and creates a new path towards justice for victims and survivors of gun violence.

You see, in 2005, Congress passed PLCAA — a special protection — that shields the gun industry from civil lawsuits unlike any other industry in America. PLCAA makes it extremely challenging for gun violence victims and survivors to have their day in court.

For years, our work challenging PLCAA has proven that the gun industry can — and must — be held accountable, despite the unjust, un-American PLCAA law. The Sandy Hook victory builds on Brady’s work and reaffirms what we’ve stated for years: The gun industry is NOT above the law.

I was proud to advise and assist the Sandy Hook lawyers. This legal victory has been in the works for decades. Since 1989, Brady Legal has led the way bringing dozens of cases on behalf of victims and survivors to challenge PLCAA, securing precedent-setting victories along the way.

It was this groundwork that established the life-saving legal precedent used in the Sandy Hook case to hold Remington accountable for the violence they fueled. Now, this case will help other gun violence victims and survivors bring lawsuits against the gun industry to create accountability.

Remembering Ahmaud Arbery and Trayvon Martin

This week marks two years since Ahmaud Arbery was shot and killed in Georgia and ten years since Trayvon Martin was shot and killed in Florida. It’s clear that Black Americans are not able to live without the fear of being shot and killed.

Friend, this is a violation of the ideals of our country. We cannot call ourselves the ‘land of the free’ when Ahmaud and Trayon were murdered while simply out for a walk and jog, and while so many more fear for their lives every day. As we mark these tragic anniversaries, we must recommit ourselves to fighting the systemic failings of our country and address root causes of gun violence.
Since Ahmaud and Trayvon’s murders, lawmakers have failed to end racist Stand Your Ground laws – in fact, they have passed more of them. So-called “Stand Your Ground” laws encourage reckless gun owners to shoot first, ask questions later — and then claim self-defense. Both Ahmaud and Trayvon’s killers used Stand Your Ground laws to claim that their actions were in self-defense and attempt to avoid the blame for their heinous crimes.

We need to show overwhelming support for ending these life-threatening and racist laws. Please, in honor of Trayvon and Ahmaud, take action against Stand Your Ground Laws.

As we mark the last weekend of Black History Month, we’re proud to honor and recognize Brady Illinois State Leader and Brady Board Member Delphine Cherry as the Gun Violence Prevention Hero of the Week!

Brady Illinois State Leader Delphine Cherry lost two of her children, Tyesa (16) and Tyler (20), to gun violence in Illinois. She understands the devastating toll of gun violence and leads Brady Illinois to advocate for stronger gun laws to help prevent what caused her family insurmountable pain.

For nearly a decade, Delphine has been involved with Brady, building new alliances of gun violence prevention activists, testifying before lawmakers in support of life-saving solutions, and meeting with prominent leaders like Hilliary Clinton and Sen. Dick Durbin. Most recently, Delphine joined Cook County (IL) Sheriff Tom Dart to introduce landmark legislation to combat the spread of untraceable “ghost guns” in the state. Delphine is also a Brady Board member and the founder of the TY Foundation (Tender Youth); formed after the murder of her son Tyler to provide resources for family members and loved ones impacted by gun violence.

We cannot thank Delphine enough for her tireless work over the years. We at Brady know that survivors like Delphine are invaluable in the fight to end gun violence.
