Union Pay and make it au lait!

This weekend DSA members are supporting the wave of workers that filed for union elections across town: Starbucks Workers United and Crossroads Workers. Both companies have hired anti-union law firms and begun disrupting workplace organizing by targeting union members. Starbucks has threatened workers for no-call, no-show absences the same day they faced each other in court. At Crossroads, workers are demanding that the company voluntarily recognize their union. If you want to show your support and help show that the city supports Starbucks workers' right to a union and collective bargaining, check out the many actions happening this weekend.

Local Council Nominations Extended

The Local Council (LC) voted Tuesday night to recommend to the elections committee to extend the Local Councilnomination deadline to February 28 at 11:59 PM and they have accepted this proposal. While we have 11 people running for 9 seats, we hope that extending this deadline will provide an additional opportunity to increase the diversity of candidates running for LC seats. Behind the scenes, nearly twenty nominees have declined to run.

If you know someone that you think would be a good candidate for LC but you didn't get around to nominating them before the initial deadline of Feb 16, you'll now have until 11:59pm on Monday, February 28 to do so. We encourage you to reach out to thembefore completing the form as a role on the LC is a significant time commitment (6-12 hours a month) and can come at the cost of what organizers are currently focused on. However, the current LC has spent many hours documenting best practices and creating tutorials on tools and systems which we hope will make life easier from day one of the new LC's term.
