John,
As a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and the House Judiciary Committee, I am strongly in support of President Biden’s nomination of Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson as the first Black woman to serve on our nation’s highest court.
Judge Jackson has already proven herself to be an exceptional jurist:
-
Early in her career, she clerked for Justice Breyer, the justice she’ll replace on the Court.
-
She was a public defender and worked tirelessly to reduce unfair sentences for her clients.
-
She was vice chair of the U.S. Sentencing Commission, where she helped reduce prison sentences for minor drug charges.
-
In 2012, she was appointed by President Obama to the federal district court for DC.
-
In 2021, she was appointed by President Biden to the federal court of appeals for DC.
Judge Jackson has been confirmed by a bipartisan vote in the Senate for three different roles. I sincerely hope the Senate will quickly confirm her again, this time as the first Black woman to serve on the Supreme Court.

President Biden made good on his promise to nominate a Black woman to the court, to elevate Black voices and women’s voices where they have long been silenced, and to appoint a candidate who understands the many injustices that exist in our legal system today.
But John, the Court is still stacked against us, with six conservative justices protecting a radical right-wing agenda. That’s why I’ve proudly introduced legislation to expand the Court and counter this far-right takeover.
Countering this ultraconservative offensive will take more work. It will require all of us to step up and ensure that we retain our majorities in the House and Senate, so that we may continue to work with President Biden to make sure we seat qualified judges. Chip in today and help us hold our majority >>
Thank you for standing with me and joining me in congratulating Judge (and future Justice) Ketanji Brown Jackson!
