PROGRAM UPDATES:

We introduce the 102nd recipient of our Families Reunidas Bond Fund Program: Gabriel! He is the first asylum seeker we have assisted from Uzbekistan who spent 2 months at the Imperial Regional Detention Center.

Gabriel doesn’t speak English and had assistance from other detainees within this facility to help him translate and fill out the application. Gabriel is now in New York and ready to start his new life. We are so thankful for the kindness of others within detention who helped us reach Gabriel and be free of detention.

We thank you for your continued support! If you would like to help others like Gabriel

We wouldn’t have predicted that this winter would have days where we would be hiking in high-80s temperatures, but there we were. The Water Drop team was ready, and the trek was long and warm.

The team left no canyons unchecked and supplied numerous canyons where traffic is still very present and where supplies are very necessary. Following footprints and finding discarded items helped guide our group to choose optimal drop sites. 25lbs of trash was collected and removed from the desert.

Until further notice, we are still not taking any new volunteers. Click here to donate ([link removed]) 💧

Today marks one year of the establishment of what was initially named "Esperanza" (Hope), the migrant encampment at the El Chaparral or PedWest port of entry in Tijuana. The encampment, made up of hundreds of migrants seeking asylum, was just recently disbanded under a harmful on abrupt eviction of its residents.

While the Biden administration has chosen to keep Title 42 and expand the dangerous Trump-era policy of Migrant Protection Protocols, we are sharing some of the great triumphs of the El Chaparral Humanitarian Alliance.

Made up of American Friends Service Committee, APALA-SD, Borderline Crisis Center, Psicologos Sin Fronteras BC, Unified US Deported Veterans, and ourselves, CHA was able to safely and legally cross over 1,000 migrants into the US under humanitarian parole. Check out the video above to see how we did it, and

A message from CA Welcoming Taskforce:
When forced to remain in Mexico, including in border cities like Tijuana & Mexicali, families seeking asylum face danger, discrimination, kidnapping and worse. Remain in Mexico (MPP) is illegal and inhumane!

BA IN THE NEWS

Gavin Newsom proposes funds for migrants on California-Mexico border. What would it cover?
Communities along the California-Mexico border continue to experience the impact of two intertwined international crises – the rapid influx and arrival of migrants seeking asylum and the ongoing spread of the highly infectious coronavirus.

Dulce Garcia is the executive director of the San Diego based nonprofit Border Angels, which advocates for immigration reform. She supports the governor’s proposed funding for migrant shelters, but said more needs to be done to address the needs of migrants waiting in Mexico.

“We know that for cities in the County of San Diego, Tijuana is an extension of our community,” she said. “Immigrants are some of the most vulnerable among us. Any resource that can go to saving a life is a resource well spent.”

Mexican authorities evict Tijuana migrant camp near border:
About a hundred members of the police, National Guard and army on Sunday evicted 381 migrants, mainly Central Americans and Mexicans, from a makeshift camp they had been staying in for almost a year in Tijuana at the U.S. border crossing.

The migrants’ tents around El Chaparral crossing were demolished with the help of excavators and trucks while their inhabitants loaded their few belongings into bags and suitcases to be transferred to three local shelters.

Gina Garibo, a program officer for American Friends Service Committee, said the Mexican government’s use of force traumatized vulnerable families who fled violence. It also perpetuated the stereotype that migrants are criminals, she said.

“It also fomented xenophobia from Tijuana residents toward people who lived in the camp,” she said.
Evicting the migrants only hides their plight away from the public eye, it does not do anything to actually improve their conditions, Garibo added.
