Today, President Biden nominated Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme Court! If confirmed, Jackson, who has been a federal appellate court judge since last June, would be the first Black woman and first former federal public defender on the Court in its 232-year history. This is an opportunity to not only add a Justice who’s committed to upholding our country’s democratic values, but also make our nation’s highest court more reflective of the people it serves. Of the 120 total Supreme Court Justices, 115 have been men, and 117 have been white. It’s more than time for a change.

Whether it has taken place on the street, in the subway station, or even over a Zoom meeting, Asian American women have unfortunately continued to face hate-motivated attacks across the U.S. These attacks have skyrocketed during the pandemic, and the problem has been particularly acute in New York City. The number of anti-Asian hate crimes in the city increased 361% last year compared to 2020, and that’s not taking into account the recent tragic deaths of Michelle Go and Christina Yuna Lee. We must continue doing everything we can to stop Asian hate in all its forms and demanding action from our elected officials. Everyone deserves to feel safe, protected, and empowered at all times.
