Texas AG Opinion Declares Sex-Change Procedures on Children as Child Abuse, Gov. Abbott Agrees

This week, Attorney General Ken Paxton released a formal attorney general opinion concluding that performing certain “sex-change” procedures on children, and prescribing puberty-blockers to them, is child abuse under Texas statutes. Texas Values Action team conducted numerous media interviews on this topic.

Paxton’s opinion wrote that these procedures “infringe on the child’s fundamental right to procreate” and that the procedures and treatments inquired about “can constitute abuse under Texas Family Code Sec. 261.

Heartbeat Law at Texas Supreme Court This Week

On Thursday, the Texas Supreme Court heard oral arguments on the Texas Heartbeat Law to answer the question of whether the Heartbeat Law can be enforced by a small number of state licensing officials. Texas Values Action team members attended the court hearing. The Texas Supreme Court did not seem convinced by the arguments from the abortion lobby.  The Heartbeat Law’s enforcement mechanism is a private civil right of action.  It does not involve government officials and it can only be enforced by private citizens through civil court cases.

The Texas Heartbeat Law was upheld three times at the U.S Supreme Court and still remains in effect.  It requires abortionists to check for a baby’s heartbeat and inform the mother if the presence of a heartbeat is detected, which can be as early as 5 weeks gestation. Since the Heartbeat Law went into effect, it has saved approximately 25,000 babies’ lives to date.
