The news couldn’t be more heartbreaking. The images from Ukraine are horrifying. I join many colleagues and the White House in condemning Vladimir Putin’s actions. I also stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and Ukrainian Americans.

Russia is responsible for the chaos that is unfolding – chaos driven by a leader's own delusion, ambition, and boundless hunger for power. This invasion was unprovoked, unjustified, and unlawful.

Authoritarianism cannot and will not be tolerated. I’m proud of the sanctions the United States and our NATO allies have placed on Russia. As we move forward in this unpredictable time, it is critical that we continue to take all steps necessary to support the Ukrainian government and people.

I have no doubt history will judge Putin and his allies harshly.
