Happy Friday, John!
During a week filled with turmoil and grief, YDA is so happy to have some good news this Friday. The Young Democrats of America are thrilled by President Joe Biden’s announcement of Ketanji Brown Jackson as his nominee for the Supreme Court of the United States. Today marks two years to the day when the president made the pledge that he would nominate the first Black woman to sit on the country’s highest court, and we could not be prouder that he has fulfilled that promise.
Ketanji Brown Jackson brings a wealth of experience to the court that many of the current justices do not have, having been a public defender in the District of Columbia and was elevated to the DC Circuit Court after nearly a decade on DC’s federal district court. A graduate of Harvard and having clerked for three justices herself, she is well equipped to be a Justice and will be able to serve on the court for years to come. Judge Jackson is an excellent choice for both her qualifications and the historical nature of this appointment.
The Supreme Court has zero Black women on it currently. A Black Woman has never been appointed to the Supreme Court. Black women are the most likely to be overlooked for positions because of false assumptions of qualifications. 108 out 115 Supreme Court Justices have been white men. It is well past time to nominate a Black woman to the court and the day could not have come fast enough.
We call on the Senate to give Judge Jackson a fair confirmation process and to not delay her appointment to the Supreme Court. After Leader Mitch McConnell’s treatment of President Obama’s last appointment to SCOTUS, our demand is that he and his caucus do not interfere in this process in bad faith and that Leader Schumer use every tool in his arsenal to get Ketanji Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court.
Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson will be a historic, and outstanding nominee to the Supreme Court of the United States and we call on all of our members to join us in supporting her nomination and appointment to the highest court.
Democratically Yours,
Matt Royer
YDA Communications Director
