John,

Here’s a startling number: during the last 232 years, only 19 out LGBTQ people have won election to the U.S. Congress. But more and more LGBTQ people are ignoring this depressing historical precedent and jumping onto the campaign trail.

In fact, more than 100 LGBTQ people ran or are running for Congress so far this year! Learn more about these candidates in our newest report: Queering Congress 2022: A Report on LGBTQ Candidates for U.S. Congress.

Check out some of our key findings:

101 LGBTQ candidates ran or are running for U.S. Congress in the 2022 cycle 16% increase in LGBTQ Congressional candidates compared to 2020 41% of LGBTQ Congressional candidates identifying as people of color 70% Of LGBTQ Congressional candidates do not identify as cisgender 16 LGBTQ candidates are running in key swing Congressional districts or battleground Senate races!

It's inspiring to know that so many LGBTQ people have stepped up to run. They do it knowing that they could face all manner of attacks, that their name, gender, sexual orientation or race will be put under a microscope and cross-examined for imagined flaws.

And despite that, they choose to run and make our political process more equal. That's something we should all celebrate. And if you can power our work to elect amazing candidates, please chip in here!

Thanks,

Elliot Imse
