This Week at CMD

The Center for Media and Democracy's (CMD) latest reporting covers the growing right-wing campaign to punish corporations that establish Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) guidelines to consider community interests and not just shareholders.

A "critical energy theory" bill approved by the energy task force of the controversial business lobbying group the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), that would blacklist financial companies that divest from fossil fuels, is making its way through several red state legislatures. Meanwhile, Republican state financial officers are coordinating their efforts to boost fossil fuel operations as the effects of climate change worsen.

CMD completed an extensive analysis of super PAC donations last year and reported on the top megadonors, an assortment of billionaires including liberal George Soros and several right-wing business tycoons who are seeking to heavily influence this year's elections. Also in this year's elections, the Big Lie era has made races for secretaries of state, which are typically under the national radar, into high-stakes contests where Republican candidates compete for Trump's endorsement and to see who can lie most outrageously about imagined voter fraud and a stolen 2020 election.
