Here’s what happened: First, Kansas Republicans openly gerrymandered their state's congressional map. One GOP senator even said "we can do better" admitting that they could have drawn districts in a more fair way, when instead their map would benefit Republicans. (Apparently Politico was right in reporting that the GOP was planning to engage in more ruthless gerrymandering.)

Then, Democratic Governor Laura Kelly correctly vetoed the map.

After that, Republicans were looking for enough legislative votes to override the veto. So they made a deal with a state senator:

“Just hours earlier, a Kansas Senate committee endorsed Steffen’s plan expanding use of unproven and potentially dangerous medicines for COVID-19, while loosening vaccine requirements for kids. The same measure could help Steffen escape scrutiny for his medical practices, including the use of ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine for COVID. It was a clear payoff to [Sen. Mark Steffen, R-Hutchinson] for changing his vote.”

You read that right – they chose to endanger children so they could advance their rigged map and override Gov. Kelly's veto.
