Hello Friend,

Giving Kiwis a choice on euthanasia

This week, the End of Life Choice Bill, with New Zealand First’s amendment for a referendum at the 2020 General Election incorporated, passed its final reading in Parliament.

A vote in Parliament on holding a referendum was a condition of our Coalition Agreement with Labour.

We believe the issue of euthanasia is too important for temporarily empowered politicians alone to decide upon.

New Zealanders elect our MPs, but they do not elect their consciences. We simply don’t accept that the conscience of 120 MPs is representative of the conscience of the country as a whole.

We believe that where possible and practicable, referenda should replace MPs’ conscience votes.

That’s why we pushed for Kiwis to have a choice, and we're proud to have achieved that this week.
