Standing with Ukranian and Russian Rule of Law Defenders
The global rule of law crisis reached a new low this week with the unprovoked attack by Russian forces against democratic and independent Ukraine, a blatant violation of international law and respect for territorial sovereignty. As the most recent WJP Rule of Law Index found, respect for rule of law principles such as constraints on government powers and fundamental rights has been deteriorating in Russia and improving in Ukraine. Vladimir Putin’s naked aggression against the wishes of the Ukrainian people is yet another sign of the dangers posed by unchecked executive power and government control of the media. We stand with the brave people of both Ukraine and Russia who want to live in peace, with respect for the rule of law.

At our upcoming World Justice Forum, leading voices from civil society, law and academia in Ukraine and Russia will share their work on fighting corruption, defending the right to information, and promoting rule of law education as part of our World Justice Challenge. We hope you can join these rule of law defenders in The Hague or online at the World Justice Forum, May 30 - June 2.

First World Justice Forum Speakers Announced

Today, the World Justice Project and our partners are proud to announce several exciting speakers at the upcoming World Justice Forum 2022: Building More Just Communities (May 30 - June 2 in The Hague and online).  We encourage you to register now to hear from Věra Jourová, the leading European Commission official responsible for the European rule of law agenda. As last week’s European Court of Justice decision against Hungary and Poland showed, rule of law is a critical issue for the future of the European Union.

Other confirmed speakers include Jan Beagle, Director-General of the International Development Law Organization (IDLO); Maja Daruwala, Chief Editor of the India Justice Report, Atieno Odhiambo, Director of the Legal Empowerment Fund, and Arizona State University’s Rebecca Sandefur. Professor Sandefur is a MacArthur-genius-award-winning expert on access to justice, one of the Forum’s three intersecting themes. The other two World Justice Forum 2022 themes are anti-corruption & open government and equal rights & non-discrimination. We will announce more speakers on a rolling basis, but don’t wait to register!
