This week, InSight Crime traces a massive transatlantic cocaine smuggling network with operatives on three continents. The ring, which had its command center in Dubai, concealed drugs in container shipments dispatched from Brazil to ports in Europe, where at least eight tons of cocaine and millions in cash were seized. The lucrative cocaine trade in Europe was also touched upon in an interview with Spanish journalist Javier Romero, who wrote a new book reconstructing the voyage of the first-known drug submarine to cross the Atlantic.

Other notable reports include Guatemala’s Attorney General’s Office mounting aggressive legal attacks against its own prosecutors investigating high-level graft; cocaine flowing from the Dominican Republic to Puerto Rico; and the CJNG cartel holding the Mexico resort town of Puerto Vallarta hostage.

InSight Crime continues to strengthen its collaboration with academic institutions around the region. One of our longest-standing partnerships is with Bogotá-based Universidad del Rosario ([link removed]) on the Colombian Organized Crime Observatory ([link removed]) , which just released a comprehensive report ([link removed]) on child recruitment by armed groups.

We’ve also long partnered with the Tecnológico de Monterrey ([link removed]) , one of Mexico’s top universities. The latest phase of this partnership is a five-week course, where Colombia investigator Sara Garcia and Mexico project director Victoria Dittmar are holding workshops with students, looking to understand our methodologies and how we conduct field investigations.

Both projects contribute to InSight Crime’s mission of not only interacting with leading academics, but with the students who will form the next generation of organized crime investigators and civil society leaders.
