This month's news on protecting people and the planet.

Dear John

I hope you’re well and haven’t been too badly affected by the storms during this increasingly troubling week.

Extreme weather is going to become more frequent as global temperatures rise – especially if we keep burning fossil fuels.

Luckily I’ve got a piece of good news on that front if you keep reading. But if you’d like to tell the government to stop approving new fossil fuel extraction projects, this is your last chance to sign our petition ([link removed]) to stop a new coal mine in Cumbria or r ([link removed]) espond to the government’s latest consultation

ANOTHER HUGE WIN AGAINST FRACKING
[link removed]

Now for the great news. 2 years on from the fracking moratorium, fossil fuel company Cuadrilla will abandon its 2 shale gas wells in Lancashire. Another triumph that pays testament to the 8 years of tireless anti-fracking campaigning from local communities.

It’s a hopeful sign that the UK’s moving on from oil and gas. But with energy bills soaring and vulnerable households forced to make impossible choices, there’s no time to spare. And as we heard from the UK’s climate committee, new drilling will not reduce energy costs [1].

Find out why we’re facing an energy crisis and what we can do about it.

HOW TO AVOID HIDDEN PLASTICS
[link removed]
Hidden plastics are everywhere – lurking where you’d least expect. A lot of them end up polluting our soils, rivers and seas. We need to phase them out, fast. So many everyday items contain plastic. But how many are you aware of?

For the second year running the government has given temporary approval to lift the ban on bee-harming pesticides, against the recommendation of its own advisors.

Read on to find out about the risk to bees and other wildlife, and how we’re taking action to protect pollinators – from pushing for strong targets to reduce pesticide use to holding the government to account on commitments set out in the Environment Act.
