U.S. unions stand in solidarity with Ukraine unions and people
As Russian tanks rolled into Ukraine and the Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Ukraine called on "all global trade union organizations, brothers and sisters from trade unions in different countries for solidarity," the AFL-CIO joined with unions around the world "standing in solidarity with our union partners in Ukraine," tweeted AFL-CIO president Liz Shuler yesterday. "We demand an immediate withdrawal of Russian troops and a commitment to political and diplomatic solutions to the crisis that will cause needless suffering and hardship for people throughout the country." Other unions speaking out included National Nurses United, whose president, Zenei Triunfo-Cortez, RN, said that "The danger of even greater escalation - which potentially involves the two largest nuclear-armed nations in the world - is particularly chilling. That threat should further impel all parties involved to seek a peaceful, diplomatic solution to this crisis immediately."
Roanoke labor rally tomorrow to support Starbucks workers
Union members and activists will rally tomorrow morning in Roanoke (see Calendar) to support Starbucks workers and their recent efforts to unionize. "We baristas are the face of the company, we are the ones making the drinks and having the conversations and connections with our customers, yet we are not given the decency of safety or livable wages," said Starbucks Workers United Committee of Midlothian and Carmia Way in North Chesterfield, Virginia. As [link removed] reported here earlier this week, there are now 10 stores unionizing in the state. Just this week, the NLRB heard petitions from workers at two Richmond area stores that filed documents last month (11136 Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield and at 6980 Forest Hill Ave.) and following the hearing, the next step will be secret ballot elections at these two stores in March.
Healthcare heroes in Prince George's County need your help
Prince George's County has been hit hard by COVID-19, "and without enough staff, healthcare workers are stretched beyond their limits," reports 1199 SEIU's Djawa Hall. "Every day, facilities are so short-staffed that healthcare workers worry about the safety of the patients they care for," says Hall. To provide high-quality care, he says, the County needs funding for safe staffing. [link removed] Click here now to urge Senate President Bill Ferguson to fund safe staffing levels for PG County, and look for the #SafeStaffingPG hashtag on Twitter today to retweet your support. "Thank you for standing up for safe staffing in PG County," says Hall.
