Today, the Russian Federation launched a large-scale military operation in Ukraine, bombing cities, causing devastation and further plunging millions of children and families into a dangerous and volatile situation. Critical infrastructure for water and sanitation, schools and health care facilities were previously damaged from conflict and remain damaged. And now in the middle of a harsh winter, tens of thousands of families are at risk of being forcibly displaced by the violence.

First and foremost: their lives. This crisis comes alongside years of armed conflict that have already taken a heavy toll on children. UNICEF has prioritized the most vital needs of children by providing access to safe water and sanitation, protecting their health and education and responding to the pandemic. Today, the continuation of this work and children’s lives are under even greater risk. |
In the wake of the military operation, UNICEF has supported local authorities in efforts to deliver health services and lifesaving trauma care, provide drinking water, offer psychosocial care and extend vitally needed supplies and care. Prior to today’s events, UNICEF already faced significant funding gaps that hamper the ability to respond to children's needs in Ukraine.
