In this morning’s predawn hours, Vladimir Putin’s Russia invaded the sovereign territory of its democratic neighbor Ukraine, without provocation.
Putin is a dictator who is totally opposed to a free society. His regime suppresses human rights, eliminates independent media, assassinates political opponents, and limits economic opportunity. This region of the world should be free and prosperous, not denied hope and opportunity by a corrupt and merciless tyrant.
As co-chair of the bipartisan House Ukraine Caucus, I condemn this blatant violation of international law, as should all Americans.
Now is the time for the Free World to rise up in defense of liberty. Together with our European allies, the United States will force Putin to fully grasp the consequences of his actions so that we may avoid the unique devastation of war.
As our hearts break for the people of Ukraine, we must deepen our resolve. We must take a stand for democracy and pray for peace.
