Send a message. Make a call. Defend abortion access now.
ACLU Supporter –
Two things are happening right now in the work to protect abortion access that you might've missed – in the courts and at the Senate. Here's what to know, and how you can take action: <[link removed]>
First, this morning, we were at the Texas Supreme Court in our coalition's legal challenge against S.B. 8 – the state's extreme ban on abortion beginning at approximately six weeks of pregnancy.
As a reminder, S.B. 8 has remained in effect for nearly half a year now. Texans who are past the earliest stages of pregnancy have been unable to access abortion in their own state – impacting marginalized communities, people living on low incomes, and people living in rural areas the hardest.
This ban in Texas, and the wave of other harmful state restrictions, only makes it more evident that our work to defend abortion access must go beyond the courts. And that brings us to the Senate.
On Monday, your senators are going to vote on the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) – a bill to provide a nationwide safeguard for abortion access.
They need to hear from as many of us as possible before then, ACLU Supporter. So I'm sharing below two quick ways you can tell your senators to support WHPA. Please take a quick moment for one – or better yet, both – in this crucial moment:
ACTION #1: Email your senators and urge them to pass WHPA now. <[link removed]>
ACTION #2: Call your senators and urge them to pass WHPA now. (You'll find a short, suggested script on this action's page to help with your call, too). <[link removed]>
Given SCOTUS has turned its back on Texans by repeatedly allowing S.B. 8 to remain in effect and that it seems poised to gut or overturn Roe v. Wade soon, we know this work feels like an uphill struggle. But remember that it was activism like yours that helped WHPA pass the House in a historic vote last fall already.
Together, we need to call on the Senate to ensure this essential piece of legislation is enshrined into law – and safeguard abortion access for every single one of us, no matter where we live in the country.
WHPA can't wait. This is the moment to reach your senator – by email <[link removed]> or by phone <[link removed]> or both – and tell them to defend abortion care now.
For the future of reproductive freedom and all our rights, thank you for your dedication.
Onward,
