I’m extremely saddened by the actions of our Governor and his Republican allies in the state legislature.
Instead of working towards solutions to the multitude of real problems our state is facing, they’re focused on restricting freedoms for Floridians.
Last week and this week, Republicans pushed forward two very harmful pieces of legislation. The first, HB 5, would ban abortion after 15 weeks, essentially eliminating reproductive freedom in Florida.
The second, HB 1557, the ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill, would prohibit classroom discussions around sexual orientation and gender identity. This bill threatens the mental health of LGBTQ students, making them feel unwelcome in an environment that is supposed to be safe.
Today, HB 1557 passed the House. HB 5 passed the House last week, and its companion, SB 146, is expected to pass the Senate next week.
As a Floridian who is Black and queer, I know all too well how dangerous these bills are. They are not only regressive, but they undermine our human rights.
