An entirely avoidable catastrophe is playing out and we need your help to prevent it!

In the ruby red state of Mississippi, a troubling story is emerging.

Establishment Republicans, at the behest of Speaker Philip Gunn, gutted an election integrity bill (H.R. 1510) that was poised for passage in the State House. Despite having supermajorities in both chambers of the state legislature, left-leaning Republicans worked with Democrats to completely strip the bill of key oversight provisions.

Republican Rep. Brent Powell offered an amendment to “strike all” of the election integrity provisions in H.R. 1510. Among the common-sense provisions that Speaker Gunn and his cadre of left-leaning Republicans eagerly worked with Democrats to eliminate:
* Providing the Secretary of State with the authority to audit election procedures at the county level.
* Providing the Secretary of State with the task to audit every county’s procedures, results, and voter rolls every four years.
* Requiring counties to use voting systems that are capable of being easily audited.
* Requiring election commissioners in each county to conduct a risk-limiting audit for selected offices.
* Requiring social media companies to report to the Secretary of State if they shut down or ban a particular political candidate from their platform.

Even in Mississippi, conservatives face intense headwinds–from members of their own party–to preserve basic functions of our republic. Perhaps most egregious is the fact that election integrity remained a critical plank of the Mississippi GOP’s official platform as recently as 2016.

Following the adoption of the Gunn-Powell “strike-all” amendment, Powell assured Democrats that the amendment removed all the “bad stuff.” All that remained of the bill’s previously strong election security policies was a federal voter-roll maintenance provision.

That provision, however, was then subsequently struck by Democrat House Minority Leader Robert Johnson through a voice vote. It was only after the gutted H.R. 1510 passed–with half of Democrats voting in favor of its now toothless text–that Mississippi Freedom Caucus (MSFC) member Rep. Dan Eubanks fought with House Leadership to restore the federal voter-roll maintenance provision that had also been swept away.

Rep. Eubanks and other MSFC members pushed to hold the bill on a motion to reconsider and restore the federal voter-roll maintenance provision. While this small effort was successful, the overall efforts by Speaker Gunn, left-leaning establishment Republicans, and their Democratic allies succeeded and the gutted bill is now in the Mississippi Senate for deliberation and potential passage.

It is critical for the Mississippi Senate to do what the Mississippi House refused to do: actually represent the people who sent them to the legislature. The Senate must restore the provisions that Speaker Gunn, Rep. Powell, and other weak-kneed Republicans gutted.
