We are ready to gather, celebrate, and educate how school nurses are Connecting Health Equity and Student Success. Registrants have two separate learning events in 2022 to meet the needs of all school nurses, amid pandemic health, travel, and economic concerns. Each event will feature its own sessions and speakers. The in-person event will take place in Atlanta, Georgia, June 28-30, 2022, and the virtual event will take place July 11-13, 2022. You can also bundle the two events together to increase the total number of NCPD CNE; double your skills, double your networking, and double your experience! BETTER LEARNING. ™ NASN News and Highlights NASN Position Statement: Student Access to School Nursing Services It is the position of NASN that all students should have access to school nursing care by a registered, professional school nurse all day, every day. For students who face barriers to accessing healthcare, especially those living in predominantly low-income, rural and minority communities, a school nurse may serve as their only regular healthcare provider. School nurses provide students, staff, and school communities with quality healthcare that is critical for health promotion, disease prevention, health maintenance, and health equity. This video shows parents, a pediatrician, and school personnel underscoring the importance of getting vaccinated to keep our schools healthy and safe. This video is part of the COVID-19 Vaccine page for schools, districts, and community partners, offering information and resources on the safety and effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine for children. COVID-19 Action Initiative Virtual Roundtable: Increasing Vaccination Rates for Youth and Adolescents The American Lung Association convened a roundtable to develop a resource for healthcare professionals to increase vaccination rates for youth. Individual community leaders must empower their trusted messengers, including school nurses, with effective messages to overcome barriers to vaccination in their communities and advocate for policies for infrastructure to deliver vaccines in varied settings like schools and community centers. CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence Strong confidence in COVID-19 vaccines within communities leads to more adults, adolescents, and children getting vaccinated ― which leads to fewer COVID-19 illnesses, hospitalizations, and deaths. COVID-19 Upcoming Events #VaxAmbassador Training: Best Practices for Community Outreach Join the #VaxAmbassador program training on Thursday, March 3 from 7-8 p.m. ET to learn how to initiate and engage in effective conversations about the COVID-19 vaccines in your online communities. Talking to friends and family is one of the best ways to help our communities get the information they need to plan to get themselves or their families vaccinated. Webinar: COVID-19 Vaccine Confidence Bootcamp Hosted by NASN and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Wednesday, March 9, 2022, from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. ET. This two-hour webinar is intended for school nurses and staff who are tasked with building COVID-19 vaccine confidence and increasing vaccine demand and will provide: An update of the state of COVID-19 vaccine confidence in the United States An overview of vaccine confidence concepts Tips for building vaccine confidence in schools Promising practices from school nurses with success addressing COVID-19 vaccine confidence and increasing vaccine demand Facilitated breakout sessions to brainstorm strategies for increasing vaccine confidence and demand (includes an interactive activity) CDC resources for communication and confidence building The webinar is limited to 200 people. Managing Chronic Health Conditions Course: Pediatric to Adult Care Transition for Students with Lupus Course participants will review the impact of pediatric-onset lupus on children and teens; identify the goal of transition planning and potential risks that can result when there is a lack of transition support for teens and young adults; and apply the tenets of supporting frameworks to their role in contributing to a phased/graduated approach to transition planning from pediatric to adult care for continued effective and seamless self-management of the disease. Evidence-based current information, tools/resources, and strategies will support the confidence and competence of the school nurse role in transition planning for students with lupus with an emphasis on health equity for at-risk students. Improving School Community & Student Health Assessing Substance Abuse Risk in Students NASN has developed online learning modules for the learner to gain an understanding of the CRAFFT 2.1 and CRAFFT 2.1+N assessment tools. They are geared toward school-age students to assess potential substance and nicotine use and/or abuse by gaining an understanding of the importance of maintaining student confidentiality, the different risk levels identified in the assessment tool, how to administer the assessment tool in the school setting, and reflect on how they can change their daily practice. Environmental Health Nurse Fellowship Program In 2019, the Alliance of Nurses for Healthy Environments (ANHE) launched the first-of-its-kind Environmental Health Nurse Fellowship program. This program trains nurses to work with communities in tackling serious environmental health issues with an emphasis on climate and health equity. AHNE's second cohort of the Environmental Health Nurse Fellowship Program will be from June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023. Applications for the program are open now, and the submission deadline is March 20, 2022. Participants will be notified of acceptance by April 8. Learn more and apply. Petition to EPA to Adopt Long-Term Clean Car Standards The ANHE released a short video of two nurses, Gloria E. Barrera (IASN President) and Dr. Roxana Chicas, talking about why clean car standards help to reduce air pollution and address the health impacts of climate change. View the video. The transportation sector is the largest source of greenhouse gases in the United States. Carbon emissions from gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles pollute the air we breathe, causing negative health impacts and contributing to the increasingly urgent issue of climate change. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has taken the first step and reinstated short-term cleaner car standards to reduce emissions from the transportation sector. However, there is still more that can be done. Join nurses in signing on to a letter urging Administrator Regan and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to move swiftly to enact the strongest possible long-term standards to clean our air, keep people healthy, and address climate change. National Children's Dental Health Month Tackles Oral Health Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors National Children's Dental Health Month to raise awareness about the importance of oral health. This month-long national health observance brings together thousands of dedicated professionals, healthcare providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, school nurses, teachers, and many others. February 28 is Rare Diseases Day Rare Disease Day is the globally-coordinated movement on rare diseases, working toward equity in social opportunity, healthcare, and access to diagnosis and therapies for people living with a rare disease. Since its creation in 2008, Rare Disease Day has played a critical part in building an international rare disease community that is multi-disease, global, and diverse– but united in purpose.
