Hi John,
Striking casino workers at UNITE HERE's sister union in Cambodia have courageously stood their ground as the Cambodian government has attempted to break their strike for more than 60 days. Eleven union leaders are now behind bars with no access to legal representation, facing criminal charges that carry sentences of up to five years in prison.
Will you join UNITE HERE and the global labor movement and call for the immediate release of Cambodian union leaders and the unconditional dropping of all charges against them?
In mid-December, members of the Labor Rights Supported Union of Khmer Employees of NagaWorld (LRSU) began striking to protest management's position in negotiations over working conditions that left many of the 1,329 workers destitute. Though strikes are legal under Cambodian law, police began arresting workers and union leaders, including LRSU President Sithar Chhim, who was violently arrested on the picket line by plainclothes police. Authorities have continued to arrest union activists.
UNITE HERE joins IUF (the global federation of hotel workers’ unions) and ILO (the International Labour Organization, a UN agency) in calling on the Royal Government of Cambodia to release jailed union activists and unconditionally drop all charges against them.
