John,
Last night, Russia began an aggressive invasion of Ukraine, bombing
infrastructure and population centers, and inflicting horrific violence on
its people.
For context, this is part of a years-long effort by Vladimir Putin to
assert more Russian control over Ukraine as its people chose democratic
leaders who sought more alignment with NATO and the rest of Europe. First
by seizing the Crimean peninsula in 2014 and then by backing separatists
in the east of the country to destabilize its government, Putin has long
wanted to keep Ukraine in Russia’s sphere of influence, no matter what its
people decide for themselves.
The people of Ukraine do not deserve this heinous attack by Vladimir
Putin. We need to stand in solidarity with them and their right to
self-determination and peace. This devastating and unnecessary loss of
life justifies aggressive sanctions to protect global security.
Across the world, authoritarianism is on the rise and now on the march,
and it threatens the safety of millions of people in peaceful democracies.
Leaders who align themselves with Putin or even go so far as to praise
this invasion are threats to the fabric of our democracy and should be
condemned, no matter their party.
Today the people of Ukraine are in my prayers, and I am grateful to hear
that the United States is committed to aggressive economic sanctions to
stop Russia and save lives.
Thank you,
Morgan
