Friend —
Homophobia is a real and constant threat. Discrimination in the workplace, at home, and in our communities continues to harm members of the LGBTQ+ communities.
Today, the Florida House will hold a final vote on a bill that will explicitly prohibit discussions about "sexual orientation or gender identity" in primary school classrooms across the state – discriminating against LGBTQ+ students, faculty members, & their families.
LGBTQ+ people are under constant attack. We need to adopt the Equality Act and push back against this hate.
As the first openly gay mayor of Long Beach, I helped strengthen protections for our LGBTQ+ community by establishing trans-inclusive health care coverage in the city and facilitated a more welcoming community citywide. Long Beach has received a perfect score from the Human Rights Campaign for Inclusive Cities every year I served as Mayor. I’ll fight for those same rights in Congress.
Florida students’ rights are in danger if the “Don’t Say Gay” bill passes statewide. This is hateful, backwards legislation.
That’s why Congress needs to step up and pass federal legislation via the Equality Act to ban discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation and gender identity.
I stand with Americans as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, and in Congress I will fight to protect the rights of all of my constituents.
Thank you for adding your name.
Together,
Robert
