Black History Month: The Fight to Achieve Environmental and Climate Justice

The conservation movement is rooted in racism and we still have a long way to go to fix it. So as Black History Month wraps up, we’re taking a moment to look back at the history of the environmental justice movement. Do you know how the term “environmental racism” was coined? Do you know how environmental racism has impacted historically excluded and divested communities? Do you know the difference between environmental justice and climate justice? Intern Spotlight: Jaelynn Douglas and Santiago M. Rodriguez

Santiago, a member of the Legislative Affairs Team, says that “working with people who share a vision of a better world and who understand that world is indeed possible” has been the best part of working at EnviroVoters. “It has been truly inspiring to see such a dedicated and hardworking group that pushes transformative change where many don’t believe necessary,” says Jaelynn, who develops social media campaigns for the Communications Team.

In February, EnviroVoters hosted a Facebook Live conversation with Bay Area Congressmember Barbara Lee and Lauren Sanchez, Senior Climate Advisor to Governor Gavin Newsom, to discuss federal climate policy and California’s leadership. “The bottom line is we need to transition to renewables and away from fossil fuels, and we need to do it fast. California is doing a good job leading the way, but this is truly a global problem,” Lee said.

 

EnviroVoters Applauds CA Democratic Party Action on Fossil Fuel Donations

The California Democratic Party has announced it will no longer accept donations from the oil, gas, and coal industries. “This is a powerful message from the institution and activists that represent California’s democratic voters and have elected the majority of our state and federal policymakers,” said EnviroVoters’ Chief Executive Officer Mary Creasman.

Introducing: California Environmental Voters’ Ambassador Program

The Ambassadors Program identifies, cultivates, and supports young leaders from marginalized communities in the Central Valley. The goal is for this cohort of young climate champions to build power to effect change on key issues like clean air, clean water, and climate resiliency, with a focus on racial justice, equity, and a green and just economic recovery.
