During the public witness testimony, several youth spoke about the programs that they enjoyed at DYRS, such as Dolls and Dreams. This program teaches social/emotional skills for girls and young women. Another program mentioned was the Back 2 Basics, which trains youth to become certified barbers.
Parents spoke about how supportive DYRS has been to their children’s and their own personal lives as they receive assistance with mentoring as well as connecting them to job opportunities.
Other public witnesses who work in community engagement discussed how they support DYRS and their youth, assisting with things like educational and mentoring services and emotional support for youthwho have dealt with sex trafficking. Parents in PAVE focused their testimonieson increasing the number of opportunities for children with Out-of-School-Time activities and enrichment programs.
DYRS Director Hilary Cairns discussed her vision for DYRS and its youth, as well as giving updates on the work of DYRS. Such updates included, Maya Angelou replacing DCPS as the educational provider for DYRS facilities; the department partnering with UDC to offer college courses; and getting trauma/grief counseling for youth. Overall, DYRS has been working to offer better services for committed youth.
