John, I wanted to share this update on how you, as a Common Cause member, are making a major difference for fair redistricting.

You see, thanks to your action and support, our litigation team is suing to STOP gerrymandering, and winning in many of the highest-profile fights for fair redistricting in key states across the country.

We’ve been sounding the alarm all year about an unprecedented wave of extreme gerrymandering – driven by politicians who would rather rig district maps to their own advantage than give voters a voice in government.

And despite the serious threat these anti-democracy gerrymanders still pose, with your help we have won multiple major victories for voters:

Earlier this month, Common Cause North Carolina won its lawsuit against the state’s racially gerrymandered maps – the court called the legislature’s plan “unconstitutional beyond a reasonable doubt”
Meanwhile, the Ohio Supreme Court has rejected Republicans’ extreme gerrymander once again.
And just this week, we won a major victory in Common Cause Maryland’s lawsuit on behalf of Black voters in Baltimore County, with a federal judge tossing out its voting districts as a violation of the Voting Rights Act and ordering new ones to be drawn.

But unfortunately, there are more legal battles ahead, including major recent activity in:

Georgia, where we brought a lawsuit against the state’s congressional districts for violating the Constitution and undermining voters of color;
Pennsylvania, where our state Executive Director joined the legal battle over that state's maps in order to highlight the importance of keeping communities together for redistricting;
and in Texas where Common Cause Texas and our allies are fighting back in court against unconstitutional racial gerrymandering.

And even in states where the courts have found in our favor, we are now facing intense days or weeks of advocating for new maps that protect all voters - that may result in more litigation if the final maps aren’t up to legal standards.

John, I’m sending you this update because we are only able to involve ourselves in so many critical fights for fair maps at once because we’re backed up by 1.5 million people like you – who care about our democracy and are ready to do what it takes to defend it.
