After graduate school, Ko Bragg moved to Mississippi to report on the South. One day in the kitchen of her parents’ home, a front-page story in the local newspaper grabbed her attention.
A 13-year-old boy had been charged as an adult for armed robbery. He’d used a BB gun to rob a classmate of his iPhone.
Moved by the story, Bragg began a reporting journey that’s been nearly two years in the making.
Along with her reporting partner, Melissa Lewis, Bragg tracked this 13-year-old’s long journey through the criminal justice system. They’ve analyzed 25 years of court data to bring to light deep racial disparities in how children get tried as adults in Mississippi. And they dug deep into historical archives to understand the Jim Crow roots of the laws that continue to put children in adult prison today.
Now, they’re ready to share with you what they found.
