John,
This Black History Month (and the rest of the year!) we celebrate the Black women who have been leading the work to protect access to abortions, access to the ballot boxes, and access to equitable healthcare. We honor the Black women who are organizing for long overdue progress in a system often working against them.
And here in Minnesota, we have fierce advocates.
In 1994, Minneapolis Mayor Sharon Sayles Belton became the first African American and first woman to serve as mayor in Minneapolis. She has been committed to this work throughout her life, unwavering in the fight for justice and equality and lifting people up to establish more representative leadership.
Commissioner Toni Carter was the first African American elected to a county board in the state of Minnesota in 2005. Her leadership has delivered results, from housing support to infrastructure to investments in youth.
Minneapolis City Council President Andrea Jenkins made history in January as the first Black, trans person to lead a city council. A poet, artist, and dedicated advocate, she is a leader for equity, environmental justice, and economic vitality.
State Representative Rena Moran is a champion and advocate for Minnesota, working hard to create more opportunities for everyone and fight for better, more equal and equitable policies. She became the first woman of color to chair the Ways and Means Committee, has served as chair of the House Health and Human Services Policy Committee, is a founder of the People of Color and Indigenous Caucus, and serves on the Black Maternal Health Caucus.
And we need to continue electing Black women. Right now, there are no Black women serving in the Minnesota Senate. In 2022, we are going to change that.
So will you sign up to join our volunteer list and help elect more Black women? [[link removed]] All of us need to be engaged and organizing for a more equitable, representative government.
We are committed to this work, this month and every month. And we look forward to being in this work alongside you.
In community,
Team Women Winning
