Canceling student loan debt and ensuring access to higher education for all Americans is more than simply a winning political issue for the Biden Administration — it’s about our values. As Americans, we cannot stand by and watch as so many struggle under the dark cloud of debt just to have access to education.
A truly equitable and robust recovery from COVID-19 should be a New Deal moment. We cannot just return to February 2020, instead we need to forge a more just future by addressing the long-standing systemic challenges that keep opportunity out of the hands of too many.
That’s why I am proud to be the first and only U. S. Secretary of Education to call for the unilateral cancellation of student debt.

The student debt crisis falls disproportionately on students and families of color and both reflects and exacerbates the racial wealth gap in our country. It’s time we take action to address this, and we must approach canceling student debt with an equity-focused lens. In order to create an economy that breaks down barriers to opportunity and lifts everyone up, I am calling on President Biden to act now to cancel student debt.
