Dear Friend,

My name is Kwentoria A. Williams (she/her), and I recently joined URGE: Unite for Reproductive & Gender Equity as Senior Communications Director. I’m thrilled to connect with you as we approach the final days of Black History Month.

To me, Black History Month is a time to celebrate how far we’ve come, commemorate the legacies of those who fought for us to be where we are, and contemplate how far we have to go. It's not just about looking at those shiny firsts; it's examining all the barriers we faced and still face to make history - to prove our standing in an America that has been dead set on othering us as if we didn't build this nation for free while being beaten, brutalized, and exploited for generations. It's about uncovering all the subtle and covert ways that racism still locks us out and keeps us behind, and YET, we persist. It's looking at our indefatigable resilience and imagining how much greater the wonders we have created and innovated could be without all the odds stacked against us.

In the spirit of commemorating the legacies of Black pioneers, I must acknowledge that I wouldn't be here without the foresight and determination of the Black women and femmes who founded the Reproductive Justice movement and cultivated a framework that centered the needs of Black communities. I know that there is a legion of young Black RJ advocates that stand ready to take up the helm and reclaim this movement on behalf of our people and our communities.

That’s why I’m proud to do the work I do at URGE, where my colleagues are training the next generation of young Black Reproductive Justice advocates and allies across the South, Midwest, and California every day.

If you would like to support our work, consider gifting URGE $20 today. <[link removed]>

Black History Month is one of my favorite months because it is an unapologetic celebration of Blackness on full display. As a nod to a meme I once saw, I tell everyone I’m Black year-round, but in February, I’m Black-bliggity-Black. This month, we have joined that celebration by amplifying Black voices at URGE and providing informative resources.

Don't forget to check out URGE's Black History Month Reading List, Playlist, and Resources page! <[link removed]>
