BREAKING: Julián Castro unveils sweeping disability plan
I need you to read this right away:
When the Americans with Disabilities Act was deadlocked in Congress, people with disabilities got down on their hands and knees and crawled up the 83 steps of the Capitol building.
Despite its passage -- and decades of progress -- people with disabilities:
-- Are twice as likely to live in poverty and to be unemployed
-- Are more likely to be victims of violent crime, sexual assault, police brutality, and end up in prison
-- Can legally be paid pennies on the dollar
I’ll be direct: People with disabilities are strong and resilient, but too often have been excluded from the rest of society and ignored by our politics.
I’m asking you to sign your name next to mine before midnight: Sign on to support my ambitious disability plan -- and demand every candidate for President release a plan to expand the rights of people with disabilities. >>
As I’ve listened to people with disabilities, it’s clear that these challenges have been ignored by politicians in Washington.
We need a new generation of leadership with bold solutions to lift up people that have been left out.
My new disability policy focused on four goals of the ADA:
-- Equal opportunity
-- Full community inclusion
-- Dignity for people with disabilities
-- Economic empowerment
As president, I’ll fight to empower and improve the lives of individuals with disabilities -- in housing, jobs, education, accessibility, and elsewhere.
Thanks,
Julián |
