2/25 Black-led Policy Forum

Friend –

We hope your year is off to a great start – Happy Black History Month! Although February is almost over, honoring Black culture and history is a yearlong opportunity. First, check out our All Black Everything playlist <[link removed]> curated by our Black staff at the ACLU-DC. Please note: This link will take you to a third-party site, spotify.com. The artists you'll hear were either born in, lived in, or went to school right here in D.C. While you're listening, you can also look through our Black Culture series <[link removed]>, where we highlight Black icons that have impacted our identities and guided the way we fight for our target issues.

Black history, unfortunately, is a mixture of joy and celebration along with pain and growth. The District of Columbia, nicknamed "Chocolate City" for its Black culture, has one of the biggest, most expensive criminal legal systems anywhere – and Black people are at the center of it.

Black residents of Washington, D.C., have long recognized that community violence cannot be solved through state violence alone. On February 25, DC Justice Lab, Harriet's Wildest Dreams, and the National Reentry Network for Returning Citizens are hosting Safety Summit 2022: Prevention over Punishment. This Black-led policy platform will focus on a legislative agenda that's ultimate goal is improving public safety and quality of life for all District residents. Natacia Knapper, Managing Organizer for the ACLU-DC will be speaking about supporting community-led solutions to public safety and the need to divest from the police.

Safety Summit 2022: Prevention over Punishment

Join DC Justice Lab, Harriet's Wildest Dreams, and National Reeentry Network for Returning Citizens on Friday, February 25 to discuss how we can change the District’s approach to policing, prosecution, and punishment.

Friday, February 25, 9 a.m.

It's time to change the District's approach to policing, prosecution, and punishment. And when policymaking happens in the District, we need to center solutions developed by people who are most affected by these laws.

We look forward to seeing you there,

ACLU of the District of Columbia
