Picking up the broken pieces
Continuing our long-standing partnership with the United Nations, on Friday, November 8, 2019, a group of 50 high school students gathered at the UN's New York headquarters to commemorate the 81st anniversary of Kristallnacht — the "night of broken glass" when Jews were slaughtered, synagogues and homes burned, and belongings left shattered in the streets on Nazi Germany, as 30,000 Jewish people were arrested and shipped to concentration camps.
Through the UN's Holocaust and Education Outreach Programme ([link removed]) , the Anne Frank Center partnered with Facing History and Ourselves ([link removed]) to help share the impact of the story, the socio-political climate that led to the tragedy, and Kristallnacht's relevance to continuing challenges today.

"The AFC mission resonates with me because in all the countries and cultures I've experienced, I've learned that despite our diversity and differences, we are all human and have a basic need for respect, connection, and compassion. Hearing this message from a child helps us understand how central it is to the human experience." - Jennifer Bower
"Where there is hope, there is life.
It fills us with fresh courage and makes us strong again."
- Anne Frank
With heartfelt thanks
We know there are millions of people throughout the world doing wonderful things for others, every day. Sometimes we don't realize what's happening right up the road, inspired by the hearts of children. Recently we learned that the Richard A. Desrochers Education Center at Vanderheyden ([link removed]) near Troy, New York had launched a project to honor the memory of Anne Frank. With the guidance of their teacher, Stephen Pelletier, a class of students studied the Holocaust, World War II, and the 75th anniversary of the Frank family's arrest on August 4, 1944. The students selected the Anne Frank Center as their charity of choice and raised nearly $400 through a community bake sale to help share our educational programs with others.

Thank you, Vanderheyden faculty and students,
for demonstrating what Anne Frank meant when she said, "Despite everything, I still believe people are good at heart."

Click here ([link removed]) for our downloadable guide ([link removed]) that offers activities for student discussion about the historical significance of the Frank family's arrest, including guided readings from the diary. Developed by Gillian Walnes Perry MBE.
So far this year
It's amazing what can be accomplished when good people work together. Because of your support, so far in 2019 our educational programs have impacted more than 50,000 people — with our performances alone reaching more than 10,000 students! We bring history to life right in front of their eyes, connecting them to the inspirational forces of Anne Frank and other humanitarian leaders like Martin Luther King, Jr. — and giving us all hope for a better future.

How you can help
Her words and wisdom have inspired millions, her diary opening doors to better understanding the past, the present, and our own future. But perhaps Anne Frank's most lasting legacy is captured with her quote: "How wonderful it is that one need not wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."

We can each start today, right where we are.
