“Americans across all walks of life own private planes.”
You might have missed it, but last week in Kentucky, GOP legislators considered a bill that would defund local communities and school districts in order to pay for a tax cut on private planes.
I wish I was joking:
Let me tell you why this is striking. It’s not just because it shows how out of touch these lawmakers are (though it does do that very clearly). It’s because this is yet another example of how poverty becomes a policy choice.
Every time politicians decide to give tax breaks to their rich donors, the rest of us pay for it.
We pay for it in overcrowded classrooms. We pay for it in broken axles from the potholes in our roads. We pay for it in cuts to Medicaid, social security, and food stamps. I am sick and tired of working people being told to pull ourselves up by our bootstraps when we have no boots to begin with.
Our elected leaders should be investing in solutions that we know would lift millions out of poverty: fully funded public schools, affordable prescription drugs, and a guaranteed universal basic income.
Ending poverty is also a policy choice. We just need leaders with the conviction to do it. This is why I’m running for the Senate. And it’s why I’m asking if you’d join me.
