Five years ago, Alexandria’s district came together to establish Troop
6000, the first Girl Scout troop founded by and for girls experiencing
homelessness.

Troop 6000 is a Girl Scout program specially designed to serve girls in
the New York City Shelter System. Each week, Troop 6000 meets in shelters
across the city. Troop meetings are facilitated by trained troop leaders –
women also living in the shelter system paired with community-based
volunteers – and give girls the opportunity to make new friends, earn
badges, and see themselves as leaders in their communities.

The New York City Shelter System is meant to provide temporary, emergency
housing for families. The average stay for a family in a city shelter can
be up to 18 months.

Every girl deserves a chance to reach her full potential: to have her eyes
opened to possibilities for college and careers, to make loving and
supportive friends, to learn from caring female mentors, and to chart her
own course to achieve her goals. That’s what Troop 6000 is all about.
