The California study estimates gas stoves emit between 0.8 and 1.3 percent of the natural gas they consume as unburned methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas.
John,
The New York Times highlighted a disturbing new study revealing that gas stoves leak significant amounts of methane when ignited and even when turned off.
The California study estimates gas stoves emit between 0.8 and 1.3 percent of the natural gas they consume as unburned methane, a dangerous greenhouse gas.
Shockingly, another estimate shows three-quarters of these emissions happen when the stoves are shut off, suggesting leaky fittings and faulty connections with gas service lines.
This study follows up with other disturbing research in the last couple of years that has shown that the indoor air pollution caused by gas stoves can, in some cases, be well above levels that would be illegal outdoors. But there’s no EPA standard for indoor air quality. This air pollution exacerbates respiratory problems, particularly asthma in children.
In 2015, more than 40 million gas stoves were in American households. Homes and buildings are responsible for an estimated 13 percent of America’s greenhouse gas emissions.
While growing numbers of American cities are moving homes away from gas-powered cooking and heating, 20 primarily red states prevent cities from restricting gas use. Large natural gas companies and utilities view electrification as a threat to their bottom lines and frequently influence these government decisions.
John, The New York Times story, and the California report reinforce the urgent need for federal agencies to continue taking action on all sources of air pollution, including those in our homes.
