John,

On Valentine's Day 2018, my kids and I
officially filed my petitions to run for Congress for the very first
time.

Looking back, the kids were so little and cute. And none of us could have
imagined what the next few years would hold.

The 2018 race was tough. I was running against a Republican incumbent who
voted alongside Trump 99% of the time. But still, Orange County had been a
Republican stronghold for decades, and our race was considered a
‘Republican toss-up.’

On election night 2018, it wasn’t clear if I had won. Votes were still
being counted, and as the next few days unfolded I started to pull ahead
in the vote count. A little over a week after Election Day, we found out I
had won with 52% of the vote.

Fast forward to the 2020 election. Like most things in 2020, the campaign
looked vastly different than I would have predicted. Instead of crowded
campaign offices and rallies with supporters, we mainly had to rely on
reaching voters by phone, text, mail, and online ads. It certainly helped
that this time I had already introduced myself to the voters of my
district, and this time, I won with 53%.

Now, I’m thinking about what this 2022 election cycle will bring. In a lot
of ways, this race will be more similar to 2018 than to 2020. Because of
redistricting, nearly 70% of the voters in my district are new to me. That
means I’ll need to introduce myself to these new voters—both in person at
local businesses and community events, and through online advertisements
and TV ads.

Like 2018, this is also a midterm election year. That means we have to
work extra hard to mobilize voters and make sure they cast their ballots.

Our race could once again be one of the most expensive House races in the
country. Republican groups are already starting to run ads against me and
here in the expensive L.A. media market, everything costs more.

[ [link removed] ]If you can, consider pitching in to help power our 2022 campaign. This
race could be my toughest yet, and every dollar given helps us reach and
register voters and keep this seat blue.

Thanks for being a part of Team Porter!

Katie
