For generations, Black women have been doing the work of seeking justice and preserving our democracy.
Yet not one of the 115 justices who have served on the Supreme Court of the United States has been a Black woman. It is long overdue that we have a Black woman on the Supreme Court.
Representation matters. President Biden must nominate a Justice who not only represents an entire community that has never been represented on the Supreme Court, he must select someone with a deep and abiding belief in fundamental civil rights, and who is committed to protecting those rights for all people.
Because hurt and harm can be codified, so too can justice, equity, and change. The Supreme Court issues decisions that have enormous impact on millions of Americans, but the 21 million Black women in the United States have never been represented on the highest court in the country.
