John —

We're coming up on the end of Black History Month, but we know that our history can't be contained in just 28 days.

In Philadelphia, we have centuries of Black history to celebrate, revisit, and reflect on year-round. Our city has been the home of legendary Black Americans like Billie Holiday and Kobe Bryant. It's where civil rights and women's rights activist Charlotte Forten Grimké grew up in a family of abolitionists.

Philly is where social activist Leon Sullivan opened Progress Plaza, the nation's first black-owned and developed shopping center. Our city hosts our nation's first major museum devoted to Black American history — the African American Museum in Philadelphia. And it was a station on the underground railroad for Black Americans escaping slavery.

John, every street and every building tells a story of the ancestors who came before us. We are standing on the shoulders of the people who resisted injustice and made Good Trouble to fight for equity, accountability, and change.

I'm working to build a stronger Philadelphia, block by block. A place that works for everyone, no matter your zip code, your income, or the color of your skin. We must pick up the mantle of the Black revolutionaries who came before us to keep building a city — and democracy — that works for the people.

I hope you take some time to celebrate our history and learn more about the folks who came before us. I know we will keep making history as we continue the long march toward justice, and I look forward to the fights we will win together.

In solidarity,

Dwight
