News broke last week that Donald Trump removed 15 boxes of presidential documents—including some labeled classified and top secret—from the White House, taking them to his residence at Mar-a-Lago in Florida. This violates the Presidential Records Act. It’s also well documented that while in office, Trump often ripped up documents, allegedly flushing them down the toilet and instructing White House staffers to place them in "burn bags" earmarked for destruction.^1,2,3

Trump's clear defiance of the law that governs presidential records is something Trump's own staff warned him not to do—but his repeated illegal actions aren't surprising as he seems to think he’s above the law.

But no one is above the law. Will you add your name to the petition calling on Attorney General Merrick Garland to prosecute Trump for hiding and destroying documents?

Time and time again, Trump has evaded accountability for his attacks on our democracy. The GOP helped acquit him after he abused his power and obstructed Congress—and even after he incited the deadly white supremacist-led insurrection on January 6, 2021.

Enough. The Justice Department can and must act swiftly to hold him accountable for theft, destruction, and concealment of public records as well as his other attacks on our democracy and elections.

The Presidential Records Act was initially put into place because Richard Nixon tried to cover up his crimes during Watergate.⁴ It was meant to prevent this reckless and dangerous behavior from being repeated.

If the Justice Department allows Trump to get away with his destruction of official documents, it will tell future presidents that they can get away with these crimes, too. This is just one of the reasons why we must come together to demand that they prosecute Trump for destroying documents as part of the larger, aggressive investigation and prosecution for his host of crimes and corruption.
