Alabama Arise Action Legislative Day: February 15, 2022

Advocates from across the state gathered online last Tuesday, Feb. 15, for Alabama Arise Action's 2022 Legislative Day. Arise staff members took member questions and provided updates on state grocery tax repeal, Medicaid expansion and many other important issue priorities. Check out the recording to learn more about our movement to improve life for every Alabamian!

WHNT: Alabama lawmakers seek elimination of grocery tax

Arise's Carol Gundlach spoke to WHNT 19 in Huntsville about the hardships that millions of Alabamians are facing, and how untaxing groceries would provide some much-needed relief. "There aren't a lot of resources for families that are having to choose between food and medicine and housing and utility payments, so every time one of them goes up, it puts more pressure on the other," she said.

Alabama Arise: Tell your state senator to untax groceries!

Please take a minute TODAY to urge your state senator to untax groceries by voting YES on SB 43 by Sen. Andrew Jones. Alabama's state sales tax on groceries is a cruel tax on survival. This tax drives struggling people deeper into poverty and makes it harder for families to make ends meet, particularly in these times of rising food prices. You can help end the tax on groceries and protect public schools by calling your state senator today and asking them to vote YES on SB 43.

CNN: ‘Devastating implications’: GOP redistricting battles in Alabama and other states raise concerns about voter suppression

Arise's Dev Wakeley spoke to CNN about nationwide threats to voting rights. “The sort of anti-democratic ideas that have infested a lot of Alabama decision-makers are much more widespread,” he said.

Alabama Political Reporter: Activists: Anti-riot bill an “attack on the core principles of American democracy”

Alabama Arise joined 17 other organizations in signing a letter opposing HB 2, an anti-protest bill. The letter says, "HB 2 attacks the core principles of American democracy, including the right to assemble and participate in dissent in the form of protest, which the First Amendment protects."

Alabama Arise: Tell your state rep: Protect the right to protest

Rep. Allen Treadaway's HB 2 is the latest in a long series of infamous attempts to limit protests in Alabama. The bill could subject people to arrest and incarceration for doing nothing more than peacefully exercising their First Amendment rights, just as Revs. Martin Luther King Jr. and Fred Shuttlesworth did. Alabamians deserve a justice system that respects basic rights and doesn't use the prospect of jail and economic devastation to threaten them into silence. Please email your representative and ask them to vote NO on HB 2 on the House floor.

AL.com: Medicaid expansion advocates tout Alabama Arise poll, PARCA report

Medicaid expansion is incredibly popular with Alabamians across the political spectrum, according to a statewide poll that Arise recently released. This data, combined with a report by the Public Affairs Research Council of Alabama that shows that Medicaid expansion would bring a positive economic impact of billions of dollars, indicates that Medicaid expansion would be a wonderful, live-saving asset to Alabama.

Cover Alabama: Collecting postpartum stories

Arise's Cover Alabama campaign is collecting stories from Alabama mothers about their obstacles when becoming a new mom. Our goal is to gather these stories and highlight the ways that lawmakers can make life easier for new parents, including but not limited to increasing health care coverage and access to providers statewide. Please consider sharing your story with our story collector Whit Sides, especially if you had Medicaid coverage or could have benefited from it. Feel free to provide as much or as little detail as you're comfortable sharing.

Bills we're watching

  • HB 2 by Rep. Allen Treadaway, R-Morris, is an anti-protest bill that could have a chilling effect on Alabamians’ First Amendment rights. The bill would create minimum holding periods for people accused of the crimes of rioting or interfering with traffic. It would also penalize certain local jurisdictions that reduce funding for law enforcement. The House will consider HB 2 today. Arise opposes HB 2.
  • HB 52 by Rep. Jim Hill, R-Moody, would allow judges to use discretion in the length of someone’s sentence if their probation is revoked. The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider HB 52 on Wednesday. Arise supports HB 52.
  • HB 55 by Rep. Jim Hill, R-Moody, would require every judicial circuit to establish a community corrections program. The House Ways and Means General Fund Committee will consider HB 55 on Wednesday. Arise supports HB 55.
  • HB 95 by Rep. Jeremy Gray, D-Opelika, would create a grace period before a formerly incarcerated person has to repay court order fines and fees. The Senate Judiciary Committee will consider HB 95 on Wednesday. Arise supports HB 95.
  • HB 312 by Rep. Ed Oliver, R-Dadeville, would prohibit the teaching of “divisive concepts” in public schools. The House State Government Committee will consider HB 312 on Wednesday. Arise opposes HB 312.
  • SB 106 by Sen. Greg Albritton, R-Atmore, is the General Fund budget for Medicaid, mental health care and other non-education public services. The Senate Finance and Taxation General Fund Committee will consider SB 106 on Wednesday. Arise is monitoring SB 106.
  • SB 224 by Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, would impose additional job search requirements as a condition of eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits. The Senate Fiscal Responsibility and Economic Development Committee will consider SB 224 on Wednesday. Arise opposes SB 224.
