New Report: Cruel by Design
[link removed] and the Center for Constitutional Rights just released"Cruel by Design: Voices of Resistance from Immigration Detention ([link removed]) ." Drawing from interviews and court declarations, the report highlights how ICE’s life-threatening and cruel practices under COVID were anything but an aberration. The report also features stories of ongoing resistance resilience from immigrants locked up by a regime that thrives on depriving people of rights and breaking their spirits.
IDP's 2022 Legislative Priorities
IDP has released our priorities ([link removed]) for the 2022 NY legislative session, which call on lawmakers to disentangle ICE policing from local agencies, stop the proliferation of surveillance technologies, and protect immigrants’ rights in court. IDP is also backing other critical bills that would stop immigration bond abuse, fight the criminalization of mental health, decriminalize the sex trade, and overhaul sentencing laws.
Standing Up for Refugee Rights
IDP recently worked with immigration law scholars to submit anamicus brief ([link removed]) in a new case before the Attorney General that threatens to expand the criminal bars to asylum and withholding of removal. The brief highlights a 2018 report ([link removed]) by IDP and the Harvard Immigration and Refugee Clinical Program on how the government’s interpretation of the “particularly serious crime” bar violates U.S. international treaty obligations. Seminar Success
Last week, more than 240 people participated in the annual Crimes & Immigration Seminar, which IDP co-hosted with NYSDA and NIPNLG. In addition to our staff speakers, we had a star-studded cast of guest speakers including Jayashri Srikantiah, Kate Evans, John Peng, Rebecca Hufstader, Tiffany Lieu, Phil Torrey and Adam Crandell. A big thank you to Jophiel Astorga, Marie Mark, Nabilah Siddiquee and all the other IDP staff who worked behind-the-scenes to make the seminar a success.

** Welcoming Alli Finn to IDP!
------------------------------------------------------------
In January, IDP was thrilled to bring on Alli Finn as the first Senior Researcher for the Surveillance, Technology, and Immigration Policing Project. Alli brings a decade of experience at the intersections of organizing, participatory research, casework, and advocacy for immigration and labor justice. Prior to IDP, they were the Research Manager for the Moving Toward Justice coalition, guiding policy research to support a community-led legislative platform for the immigrant rights movement. They also advocated for migrant domestic worker and refugee rights for four years with the Anti-Racism Movement, a grassroots feminist organization in Beirut.
