Child Defender,

Educators across the country are facing unprecedented challenges not just from the pandemic's threats to classroom safety but from states threatening to ban "divisive content" and so-called critical race theoryin other words, Black historyfrom school curricula. Teachers are being called to determine how to impart not only what has been historically true in America but what will help students move America forward.

The Children's Defense Fund has always been rooted in the legacy of the Civil Rights Movement's grassroots educational campaign. It informs our CDF Freedom Schools® and the scholars within them as they learn about, reflect on, and apply the lessons of real-life Black heroes. Our childrenand our educatorsneed these lessons now, as the veracity of the Black experience in America is being questioned, as politicians debate whether to erase this experience from our history books.

During Black History Month, and every month, CDF shares free, essential resources for teachers and students to guide them in honoring Black leaders and building up new ones. The story of Black Americans is, and continues to be, marked by a struggle against oppression, but it is also a story of creativity, liberation, and joy. Our young people have the power to move the story in new directionsif we empower them now.

Every day, we're fighting to ensure Black children and young people in America have access to food and safe housing, health care, and opportunities. Let's make sure they have access to their historyand their futuretoo.

In solidarity,
