John, I’ll cut to the chase: I’m going to ask you to make a donation today — but only if you can afford to. Before I ask though, I want to tell you more about how we’re doing things and what we’re up against.

As you probably know, we’re running a people-powered campaign. That means the overwhelming majority of our donations come from people like you with an average contribution of about $32.

Our opponent is doing things differently. Henry Cuellar has spent years amassing a war chest of corporate PAC money. He’s taken checks from Big Oil, the NRA, the Koch Brothers, the private prison industry — and the list goes on.

After our incredible fundraising haul last quarter, there’s no doubt he’ll be running to his corporate backers and urging them to cut more checks to his campaign. After all, 1.18% of his money came from small-dollar donors last quarter.

Meanwhile, Jessica isn’t taking a dime of corporate PAC money, and she doesn’t have a bunch of millionaire and billionaire friends who can cut big checks. Instead, she has you.

Look, I know we ask a lot of you and not everyone is able to give every time — and that’s okay! But it means that we need those who can afford to give a bit more to step up and help us make up the difference.
