Join us for the first GND4PS Town Hall
|
Wednesday, February 23 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
|
DSA-LA’s Green New Deal for Public Schools LA campaign is hosting a 3-part public education town hall series (via Zoom) that gets at the core of the fight to defend and fully fund our public schools.
If we want to win a robust Green New Deal for LA public schools, we must ensure that our schools are well resourced, fully staffed, and protected from capitalist forces that seek to privatize and siphon funding from public schools that serve the majority BIPOC working class communities of LA County.
The first installation of our town hall series is “Public Education v Billionaire Class”. In this town hall, we will discuss how public schools can become sites for class struggle and how LA has become one of the key battlegrounds in the fight over school privatization.
To prepare for this town hall we have a shortlist of readings for attendees to review in advance. We highly recommend reading the articles listed below as they will contribute to a collective discussion of the issues facing our public schools and how we can organize to build the schools students deserve.
Readings for the town hall:
And here is a supplemental video explainer of Prop 15 and how it affects public school funding in California.
We look forward to your participation in this town hall conversation, and to working together to build stronger public schools!

SFV Marxism Reading Group: Critique of the Gotha Program & The Historic Contribution of Karl Marx
|
Tuesday, February 22 @ 7:00pm - 9:45pm
|
Come on down and discuss 2 pieces with us on 2/22/22 at 7 PM PST.
The first piece is Critique of the Gotha Program by Marx – A letter from the late Marx where he critiques in fine detail the program of the Social Democratic Workers’ Party of Germany, a forerunner to the still extant SDP. In it, Marx gives us some clues into how he thought a post-revolutionary society could develop out of a capitalist one.
He gives his position on the party of the working class, the dictatorship of the proletariat, what the phases of communist society will be, protelarian internationalism, and (naturally) production. All of them topics that are still debated.
The second piece we’ll be discussing is The Historic Accomplishment of Karl Marx, the printed form of a lecture Karl Kautsky gave in 1907. Recently translated by Alexander Gallus of Cosmonaut Magazine, Kautsky’s lecture summarizes what Marx and Engels brought to socialist thought, and gives us an idea of how they influenced the Orthodox Marxists.
Since the writing style in the 19th century was weird we’ll be reading from a collaborative Google doc where we can ask questions, clarify points, and post takes. Please RSVP for access to the doc and Zoom Connection info.
We will also be voting on the contents of the next module, Latin American Socialism, at 9:30. Got some recommendations? Tell us about it! RSVP here!
