Dear John, Happy President’s Day! We know that many people have today off, but the Oregon Legislature is still at work! If you’re signed up for action alerts, you received a text about House Bill 4034. We asked you to email the legislators on the Joint Ways and Means Committee, and you delivered! But this bill is still moving forward unchanged. You can make a difference today by taking a minute to call a member of the Subcommittee on Human Services. Links to their legislator pages, phone numbers, and a script for some guidance with the call are below. If your legislators are on the committee, you should call them specifically. HB 4034 has a work session scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. You can help stop dangerous parts of this bill from becoming law by making a call. Because everyone deserves an advocate, Justin Hageman Sen. Kate Lieber (D—Beaverton) | (503) 986-1714 Rep. Rob Nosse (D—Portland) | (503) 986-1442 Sen. Sara Gelser Blouin (D—Linn and Benton Counties) | (503) 986-1708 Sen. Tim Knopp (R—Bend) | (503) 986-1727 Rep. Winsvey Campos (D—Aloha) | (503) 986-1428 Rep. Cedric Hayden(D—Roseburg) | (503) 986-1407 Rep. Duane Stark (R—Grants Pass) | (503) 986-1404 Rep. Anna Williams (D—Hood River) | (503) 986-1452 Briefly introduce yourself, giving your name and where you are from. This can be as specific as your home address, but try to share what city you’re from. It is likely you will end up leaving a voicemail instead of reaching a staff person. Here’s the script: I am calling to let you know that I am concerned about House Bill 4034, specifically sections 9 through 12. Section 10 has incredibly vague language, which would give the Oregon Health Authority virtually unlimited power regarding reproductive healthcare. An unelected, unaccountable, and failed agency should not be able to do whatever they want without legislative oversight. Section 12 makes the controversial Reproductive Healthcare Equity Act permanent. I believe that abortions should not be funded with tax dollars. Also, I am really worried about the Oregon State Legislature trying to rush this through a short legislative session without open debate. Oregonians deserve representation that considers all sides and explains the outcomes of all legislation, especially the ones that address controversial issues. I would really appreciate any information you have about this that would help me understand what’s going on here. Thank you for your time. |
