   Dear People For supporter,
Today is Presidents Day, dedicated to the leaders who have come before us.
But remember: it is the one major elected office at any level of
government that is not determined by the winner of the most votes. And
it’s long past time we change that.
The current Electoral College structure has resulted in two presidents of
the past four presidents getting elected despite receiving fewer votes
nationwide. In order to prevent the will of The People being dismissed we
must urge our state lawmakers to support the National Popular Vote
   Interstate Compact.
[ [link removed] ]If you support letting voters elect the president based on which
candidate gets the most votes, sign here to urge your state legislators to
support a national popular vote. >>
Under the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact (NPVIC), states agree
to award all of their electoral votes to the winner of the popular vote
nationwide, rather than state by state, to ensure that whoever becomes
president actually won the most votes overall.
The NPVIC would put power back in the hands of voters. Although NPVIC is
already law in 15 states plus the District of Columbia, we need several
more states to put this law into action during future presidential
elections – and that’s where your state lawmakers come into play. This
agreement needs to be passed at the state level before it can be put in
place, and your state’s lawmakers need to make that happen.
[ [link removed] ]Please add your name now to demand that your your state
legislators support passage of the National Popular Vote Interstate
   Compact without delay. >>
In 2000, Al Gore won the national popular vote by more than half a million
votes. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won it by more than three million. And yet
neither of them “won” the presidency.
The consequences of this outdated system are massive – we will feel the
effects of those lost presidencies for generations to come. And the NPVIC
is a broadly supported, simple fix that doesn’t require an amendment to
   the Constitution.
Thank you for taking action to defend our democracy today.
   – Ben Jealous, President
