Dear John,
The Biden administration is considering reinstating a designation of the Houthis in Yemen as a terrorist organization. This decision would cause an economic collapse in a country already experiencing a devastating humanitarian crisis. At least five million people are just one step away from famine in Yemen.
The Houthis have committed horrendous atrocities, just like the Saudi-led coalition and other armed groups. But designating them as a terrorist group would only compound the suffering of Yemenis and is unlikely to influence the Houthis' actions. When these designations went into effect last year, we saw dramatic cutbacks in imports of food, medicine, and other vital commodities. These dire consequences could materialize again but we can’t let that happen.
Rather than moving ahead with the designation, the US should support new, independent accountability mechanisms and a renewed focus on a political settlement to the conflict.
Designating the Houthis as a terrorist group would be deadly for the Yemeni people. Sign your name now and demand that the Biden administration put the lives of Yemeni people first.
